Orange in NSW is your ideal place for a great getaway. If you enjoy food, wine and a romantic rural setting, head west to Orange. The city is characterised by beautiful tree-lined streets and charming houses dating to the early twentieth century. The birthplace of Banjo Paterson, has rich agricultural land, undulating hills and an inspiring setting. It is bound to bring out the poet in anyone. Soak up the rich heritage and culture of Orange with a self-guided heritage trail. Or amble along country streets taking in local architecture and attractions.

It is known and accepted that A.B. ‘Banjo’ Paterson was born at Narrambla near Orange on 17 February, 1864. But there is a problem. Some people argue that he was born at the home of John Templer, a local mill owner. He was the husband of Paterson’s great-aunt Rosamund, but no one is sure where the home was.

On the road to Ophir, 5 km from Orange, is a white monument, unveiled by Paterson’s widow in 1947. The monument declares that this was the location where Andrew ‘Banjo’ Paterson was born. There is a pleasant park area where enthusiasts can enjoy a picnic and appreciate the rolling countryside.

The City of Orange’s rich history spans from the traditional Wiradjuri land owners. But it also includes colonial settlers, gold miners and commercial traders.
