Walgett NSW

Walgett in NSW is the rural service centre for an enormous pastoral area which stretches to the state border. The town is located by the Namoi River near its junction with the Barwon River in northern New South Wales . The town describes itself the ‘Gateway to the Opal Fields’. This title comes from the fact that it’s on the road to Lightning Ridge and the Grawin, Glengarry and Sheepyard Opal Fields.

The district around the town is known for its wool, beef cattle, chick peas, barley, lucerne, fat lambs, sheep studs, cotton and wheat. Its riverside location also makes it a good spot for fishing. Murray cod and yellowbelly being the predominant catches.

Relax at the free Walgett Artesian Bore Baths, where water from the Great Artesian Basin springs to the surface at a constant temperature of around 40 degrees. Approximately two million years old, the water has reputed therapeutic qualities and is perfect for a long soak.

One hour from Walgett, Burren Junction is also known for its free artesian bore baths. There’s also free camping on-site, as well as electricity, poolside showers, barbecue facilities, filtered water and a dump point.

Explore Wagett’s Opal Fields and National Parks

If you’ve got a taste for adventure, Lightning Ridge is just under an hour’s drive north, where you can take a tour of opal fields and visit classic bush pubs as well as fossick for gems on red river banks. In the nearby Grawin opal fields, you can buy hand carved gemstone figurines at Marg’s Carvings

Just out of town, Muddy Waters is a family-run 40 acre farm and fishing paradise on the Barwon River. At the farm you can camp and fish for Murray Cod and blue crayfish. Drive 3hr 10min east from Walgett and discover Pilliga National Park, home to rugged beauty and important Aboriginal historic sites.

Jimmy Little, the hugely successful musician, who lived in Walgett

Located on the Walgett Water Tower (clearly visible as you enter Walgett) is the Jimmy Little Memorial Mural. Jimmy was Australia’s first, hugely successful First Nations musician who lived in Walgett for a time. Jimmy Little was voted a National Living Treasure in 2004. He was awarded the APRA prestigious Ted Albert Award for this Outstanding Services to the Australian Music Industry in 2010.

The mural is based on a photograph by John Elliott, who also took photographs of other well-known Australian country music performers. The portrait was created by Jenny McCracken with the Aboriginal background has been designed by local Gamileroi artist Frank Wright. It will include a river system map of the area and local totems.

Walgett Historical Society

Located in Fox Street, the Walgett Historical Society Museum has displays of photographs which tell the story of the town from the time paddle steamers arrived. It also pays homage to Frederick York Wolseley who invented the first mechanical shearing machine and many other agricultural implements on Euroka Station. The museum has displays of his inventions.
