Thargomindah QLD

Thargomindah in QLD is located on the Bulloo River and, although tiny and quiet, it offers most services. These include a motel, caravan and hotel accommodation and a range of eating options. When it came into existence in the 1870s and 1880s the town’s main activities were servicing the stations at Bulloo Downs and Durham Downs. Later it became an important stopover for carriers taking wool from Queensland to the steamers which travelled down the Darling River from Bourke to South Australia.

Thargomindah provides the perfect launch pad for Cameron Corner – the point where three Australian states meet. There is also the iconic Burke and Wills ‘Dig’ Tree at Cooper Creek and historic hotels at Noccundra and Hungerford. Purchase a ‘swipe card’ from the Visitor Information Centre in Thargomindah and take a self-guided tour of Australia’s first hydroelectricity system driven by artesian water pressure, the historic Old Hospital and the Old Jail, or enjoy fabulous birdwatching and nature activities at the unique Lake Bindegolly and Currawinya National Parks. You can fly into the well maintained Thargomindah Airstrip.

Vincent Dowling’s decision in 1864 to establish a pastoral lease (which he named ‘Thargomindah Station’) resulted in a town of the same name being gazetted in 1874. Today, Thargomindah is a modern country town with the most services a visitor would expect.

Thargomindah retains much of its bush character with nicknames in common use! Say hello to the Mayor ‘Tractor’ Ferguson, or ‘Duck’ and ‘Daisy’ who own the Bulloo River Hotel.

Australia’s First Hydroelectric Plant

Hydroelectric Plant at Thargomindah QLD

In 1891 drilling commenced on a bore to supply Thargomindah with water. In 1893 an exceptionally good supply was struck at 808 meters (2650 feet) with the water at 84 degrees Celsius.

The bore was the source of energy for Australia’s first hydroelectric scheme to produce street lighting. In 1893 Thargomindah’s streets were lit. The source was a generator coupled to a water turbine driven by the bore’s natural water pressure.

They are third in the world to Paris and London to have street lighting generated by Hydro Power! Thargomindah was the first town to have reticulated Artesian Bore water.

The Hydro Power Plant is apart of a automated self-guided tour we offer. Stop into the Visitor Information Centre and purchase your swipe card. This will allow you to activate dynamic documentaries and holograms. These come to life and tell you interesting stories about life at the time.
