The Norseman Airport in WA is situated west of the Norseman townsite on the bed of Lake Cowan, a large salt lake having an area of approximately 1000 km2
The previous airstrip was located at the natural surface of the salt lake. During rain events, the salt content within the top layer of the surface would often dissolve, compromising the stability of the runway and preventing planes from landing. To improve the serviceability of the airstrip a new runway was proposed.
The upgrade, which began in 2018, included transforming the airstrip into an all-weather landing facility, which no longer required a threshold instrument flight procedure to assist planes in bad weather, saving the Shire $200,000.
Norseman is the last major town in Western Australia before heading east across the Nullarbor Plain. It is a large, sprawling town driven by mining and tourism, dominated by a huge (4 million tonnes of fine quartz) tailings dump, and vulnerable to the changing price of gold. It is sustained increasingly by the large numbers of people crossing the Nullarbor and using it as an important centre for supplies and information.
