Newman in WA is only 191 km from Karijini National Park. Qantas and Virgin Australia offer daily direct flights from Perth to Newman, and 4WD hire is available at the airport.
Sitting on the edge of the Western Desert, the town is dominated by Mount Newman (1053 metres). It was named after the explorer Aubrey Woodward Newman. In 1957 a huge iron ore deposit was discovered at Mt Whaleback. This is now the site of the largest single open-cut iron ore mine in the world.
Newman WA – An Attractive Mining Town
Newman is the largest inland town in the Pilbara. It is a modern, attractive mining town in the heart of the Ophthalmia Ranges. It provides accommodation for the two huge mines: Mount Whaleback and Orebody 29. The town has a population of around 5,000 people. Around 4,000 miners use the town on a FIFO “fly in-fly out” basis.
The Eastern Pilbara is one of the most isolated and inhospitable regions in Australia. Temperatures in summer time hover around 40°C and the hot winds blow in off the Great Sandy Desert. It is hardly surprising that the Aborigines who lived in the area didn’t have to contend with the arrival of Europeans until the twentieth century.

There’s also plenty for nature lovers around Newman. Weeli Wolli is a permanent freshwater spring providing a haven for fish and birdlife. Kalgans Pool is the perfect place for a refreshing dip. And the road to Eagle Rock Falls offers a great four-wheel drive adventure.
The World’s Largest Open-Cut Iron Ore Mine
In Newman you can take a tour of a man-made wonder – the world’s largest open-cut iron ore mine, Mount Whaleback – and marvel at the sheer size of BHP’s operation and mining machinery.
Drop into the Newman Visitor Centre to learn more about the area’s natural and cultural attractions, including the local waterhole, the Ophthalmia Ranges and nearby Aboriginal rock art. At the centre, you’ll find an art gallery, interpretative displays, the Outdoor Mining Museum and an arts and crafts shop featuring an extensive range of locally made and Western Australian products.
