Maryborough in VIC is situated on the northern slopes of the Great Dividing Range and surrounded by bushland. The large town of Maryborough has roots which date back to the Gold Rush days of the mid-1800s. At that time gold mining was the predominant industry in the region.

Historical buildings are a feature of Maryborough today, with the highlights being the well-preserved commercial streetscape along High Street. Others include the iconic public buildings such as the Post Office in Clarendon Street, and the grand railway station which was built in 1890.

Phillips Gardens, located at the junction of Alma Street and Inkerman Street, date back to 1870. It features a lake surrounded by lawns, trees and a wetland area which is a haven for birdlife.

Don’t miss the lookout tower at the Bristol Hill Reserve, on the western edge of town. It offers impressive views over Maryborough and the surrounding countryside and forests.

Princes Park, Maryborough VIC

Princes Park

Water attractions include Lake Victoria which is located within Princes Park, surrounded by parkland and sporting facilities. Two kilometres south of town, on the road to Ballarat, is the Goldfields Reservoir. It used to supply Maryborough with water but is now a recreational boating and fishing lake.

A short drive south of Maryborough is the Paddys Ranges State Park. Here relics of the gold mining era and colourful wildflower displays can be observed.

See impressive 19th century architecture in McLandress Square’s public buildings. The Italianate-style historic post office, town hall and court house are stunning works of some of the region’s best architects. In contrast, the charming Worsley Cottage Museum depicts domestic life on the goldfields. The stone cottage houses the historical society, and an 1844 slab squatter’s hut behind is believed to be the district’s oldest building.

Bric-a-brac lovers and old wares collectors will lose time in the many quality boutiques that characterise Maryborough’s shopping strips. The ornate Maryborough Railway station itself is the town’s most prized antiquity and attraction. Inside there is a café/restaurant and gallery, where visitors can relax and enjoy historical ambiance.
