Grafton NSW

Grafton in NSW is located nearly 50 km from the coast is a substantial and gracious rural city. It is characterised by wide streets, elegant Victorian buildings, a superb location on the banks of the Clarence River. It has a sense of solidity and permanence, and a long-standing concern with civic beauty. This is obvious from the 24 parks which adorn the city. The first ornamental trees were planted as early as 1874. The city’s famous jacaranda stands, which are celebrated with an annual festival, were planted in 1907-08.

A City Divided by the Clarence River

The city is situated on, and divided by, the Clarence River. In 1932 the two storey bridge was built, presenting a barrier between the city centre and the road to Sydney. The Clarence has four tributaries – the Nymboida, the Orara, the Mann and the Coldstream. They constitute the largest river system on the northern New South Wales coast. The river system contains over 100 islands, including Susan Island which lies between Grafton and South Grafton.

Grafton NSW – A Heritage Retained

Grafton in NSW is a refreshing contrast to the modern architecture that dominates many established cityscapes these days. The main street is home to several beautiful heritage buildings. These showcase the unique design styles from the turn of the century.

There are several colourful murals throughout the main street and along the marina. The pop of colour makes them hard to miss! Combined with the heritage architecture, these murals make South Grafton feel like a living, breathing, art installation.

Trekking and Mountain Bike Tracks

Moving out of the city, the fire trails of Glenugie State Forest are easily navigated. For those craving a little challenge, how about tackling the track up Mount Elaine, to reach Glenugie Peak? With rocky, steep inclines, it’s a playground for seasoned outdoor enthusiasts. The 360 panoramic view, overlooking the Clarence Valley, is worth the effort.

Just five kilometres south of Grafton, a web of bike trails wind through the Bom Bom State Forest bushland. For the most part, the tracks are gentle, but some sections are classed as difficult. It’s great for beginners and experienced mountain bikers to explore – as well as those looking for a good trail run!
