Cunnamulla Qld

Cunnamulla in QLD has a distinct old world charm. The hotels in the main street have remained unchanged for over half a century. You will also notice that the shops still have a pre-supermarket feel to them. The beautiful tree-lined streets evoke the world of the country town long past.

The Cunnamulla Fella

Cunnamulla locals reckon that in their town, the handshake’s stronger, and the smile lasts longer. Perhaps that’s why Slim Dusty’s ‘Cunnamulla fella’ has become the epitome of bush folk. His bronze statue has pride of place in the main street. It immortalises the larrikin in all Australians as he sits on his swag enjoying the moment.

Visit the Cunnamulla Fella Visitor Centre to look into this bush legend and collect maps of the town. There are many walks on offer, and we found them so interesting. While you’re at the Centre, take a look through the art gallery and interpretive displays. These explain the local history, opal mining, wool production and native vegetation. They also highlight the importance of the Great Artesian Basin and its precious water.

The Cunnamulla Heritage Trail will let you glimpse the region’s past. It includes the development of a local pastoral industry that still supports the town today. Walking trails along the river and through the Cunnamulla bushland will encourage you to slide effortlessly into the relaxed way of outback life. However keep your eyes peeled for plentiful native wildlife hiding in the scrub.

The Cunnamulla Fella Roundup – Not to be Missed

The Cunnamulla Fella Roundup

Of course, one of the greatest pleasures of an outback holiday is having a yarn with the locals. If a yarn over the bar of one of the number of great bush pubs isn’t enough, Cunnamulla hosts many regular social events. These include bowls, as well as the famous Cunnamulla Fella Roundup. The Roundup is held each year on the first weekend of July. Its program includes country music and the excitement of a professional (PBR) bull ride.

You’ll know you’ve arrived in this outback town when you spot the Cunnamulla Fella. This larger-than-life statue is a tribute to the Aussie larrikin stockman. Two famous Australian Performers, Slim Dusty and more recently Lee Kernaghan have had a hand in making the Cunnamulla Fella famous. Slim Dusty put the lyrics of Stan Coster to song. More recently the song has been performed by Lee Kernaghan.
