The gateway to the world famous Gippsland Lakes, Bairnsdale is the perfect spot to stock up on supplies. Your outdoor adventure may include boating, surfing, camping and fishing gear. Bairnsdale is located at the junction of the Great Alpine Road and the Princes Highway. It also provides easy access to the alpine villages of Omeo, Dinner Plain and Mount Hotham.

History and culture 

Tour the Bataluk Cultural Trail and discover elements of Koorie history and culture. Also visit the Krowathunkooloong Keeping Place to view artefacts and history on the Gunaikurnai people of East Gippsland.

Be sure to also visit to St Mary’s, an impressive Romanesque church built at the beginning of the 19th century. Wander in and check out the murals by Italian artist Francesco Floreani. These murals attract some 80,000 visitors to the church every year. 

Delve into the creative heart of the region at the East Gippsland Art Gallery. See works by local and visiting artists across a range of mediums, including paintings, drawings, mixed media, prints and 3D works. 

Bairnsdale is also a commercial centre for the local wool, dairy and timber industries.
