Bairnsdale Airport in Victoria was originally RAAF Station Bairnsdale, which was a training establishment formed during World War II. No. 1 Operational Training Unit (1OTU) and the General Reconnaissance School (GRS) were based there during the war years.
In 2017, East Gippsland Shire Council (owner & operator) of Bairnsdale Airport appointed a full-time Aerodromes Coordinator – Jason Connelly to manage the Aerodrome in accordance with published standards. In 2018, Bairnsdale Airport was awarded Regional Small Aerodrome of the Year as voted by the Australian Airports Association (AAA). This was a remarkable achievement for a once WWII training establishment. Notable changes to the facility were Airfield presentation, high-security focus with fencing and CCTV installed, runway overlay and general Airport presentation.
