A man with a Vision – Dr Reg Sprigg
Arkaroola in SA, and specifically Arkaroola Wilderness Sanctuary, is the personal vision of the late Dr Reg Sprigg. Dr Sprigg purchased the 610 square kilometre (61,000 ha) property in 1968. He then slowly converted it into a wildlife sanctuary complete with a lodge.
Arkaroola SA – an Ancient Land
The region is characterised by dramatic, ancient hills (some rocks are estimated to be older than 1000 million years). There are also beautiful waterholes and a truly harsh and dry environment. The Adnajamathana Aborigines believed that Arkaroo, a mythical monster, drank Lake Frome dry and then crawled into the mountains. As Arkaroo moved through the land he created the Arkaroola Creek. Where he urinated he left the waterholes which are one of the most beautiful parts of the Arkaroola area.
Arkaroola Wilderness Sanctuary SA
Today it is a combination of the remnants of a 19th century copper mine and smelting operation; a wilderness sanctuary; a superb astronomical observatory suited to the sublime desert night skies. Also an outstanding 4WD route to Sillers Lookout. Here you’ll see some of the most spectacular and panoramic views anywhere in inland Australia.

You can choose from a range of fully accredited Advanced Ecotourism products, including the world-famous Ridgetop Tour. With 130 kilometres of graded public access tracks, Arkaroola’s visitors can wander through a landscape of deep time. Human intrusions are minimal. Take short two wheel drive vehicle tracks to secluded waterholes. More greater challenges try four-wheel drive vehicle tracks across rugged mountains to spine-tingling lookouts.

Within the sanctuary, Arkaroola Village provides all the comforts sought by the contemporary traveller. This includes air conditioned motel lodges, a caravan park with powered and un-powered sites and bush camping areas. There is also a licensed restaurant, bar, lounge area, fuel outlet, complimentary barbecue facilities and a large in-ground swimming pool. For your convenience there is a visitor information centre.
