The Bunbury Council first investigated the possibility of an airstrip in 1965, with the help of a band of enthusiastic aviators. With input from the Department of Civil Aviation, the airstrip became operational in 1969.

Since then hundreds of pilots, and many others, have gained experience or accumulated flying hours. Many of these have gone onto successful careers in commercial or military aviation.
