Nhill Aviation Heritage Centre

One of the favourite attractions in Nhill is the Aviation Heritage Centre. Located at the aerodrome, this ‘not-to-be-missed’ tourist attraction is home to some vintage aircraft. These include a partly-restored Avro Anson aeroplane, a fully-restored Wirraway, an operating Tiger Moth,  a de Soutter and a Link Trainer (1930s flight simulator).

You will be amazed at the workmanship, the attention to detail and the remarkable progress that has been made in just eleven years, all done by volunteers. These photos show the Avro Anson and the awesome transformation that is currently taking place.

The Nhill Aviation Heritage Centre is a tribute to the 10,000 young men and women who trained at the Nhill aerodrome when it was an RAAF Base during World War II.

Avro Ansons, Wirraways, and Tiger Moths were the main aircraft used in their training. A growing collection of memorabilia tells the story of these days, along with the history of the aerodrome since the first aeroplane touched down in Nhill in 1919.

Many of the world’s most celebrated aviators of both sexes have landed on the aerodrome, including C. W. A. Scott. Sir Charles Kingsford-Smith. “Battling” Butler. Jimmy Mollison. Bert Hinkler and Amy Johnson. Nhill was a control station for the East-West air race, and also for the SA. Centenary race from Brisbane to Perth.
