Mudgee Museum and Historical Society
There are many great attractions in Mudgee NSW. One of these is the Mudgee Historical Society Inc. It collects and displays items and documents pertaining to the history and culture of the Mudgee district. The Society promotes its history, and provides a family history research service from its extensive archives.
The Mudgee Historical Society was founded in 1964. It operated in rooms in part of the former Post Office Hotel on the south-eastern corner of Market and Perry Streets.
In 1966 the former West End Hotel premises in Mudgee West were acquired as the Society’s museum and headquarters. Since then the site has been expanded and additional buildings have been constructed. All buildings have been re-located to the site to house the Society’s extensive collection of Australiana, all locally sourced.

Mudgee Observatory
The observatories and buildings were all constructed by John who has over 45 years of astronomy experience. The facilities are used on occasion by the members of the Sutherland Astronomical Society.
We are now open to the general public and catering for school groups, organized tours and the general public. Please note may not be suitable for children under 5 years old.
The observatory is situated 15 minutes drive to the west of Mudgee. The location has extremely dark skies away from the town lights and the lights of Ulan mines.
Here the night skies can be viewed as they were meant to be viewed.
A visit to Mudgee Observatory can be both entertaining and educational.
The theatre and flat screen planetarium runs several features on the night sky and the Sun as well as many programs on space missions.
A good variety of telescopes and binoculars are available for our visitors to use. There are also conducted tours of the night sky.
The observatory shop sells coffee, cold drinks and confectionery as well as books on astronomy and other items.
