Canoe the Coorong

Canoe the Coorong - Country Airstrips Australia

One of the great attractions in Meningie is Canoe the Coorong.

Located just 85 km south of Adelaide is the internationally recognised Coorong Wetlands, one of South Australia’s best-kept secrets.

Stretching more than 140 kilometres, the Coorong National Park protects a string of spectacular saltwater lagoons which are sheltered from the Southern Ocean by the sweeping, rolling sand dunes of the Young Husband Peninsula. The best way to explore these waterways is by kayak.

Kayaking is the most enjoyable and sustainable way to see the Coorong, allowing an intimate experience with the wildlife of the Coorong without impacting the natural ecology.

Something for Everyone

Canoe the Coorong offers tours for people of all ages and skill levels. Popular tours include a three-hour Coorong sunset tour of the Murray Mouth, a full day all-inclusive Coorong tour, overnight camps and, for real adventurers, a four-day expedition covering almost 100km.

Meningie Cheese Factory Museum

The Meningie Cheese Factory Museum

In 2000 Ray Ashenden, a demolition contractor, began work restoring and refurbishing the former Lakeside Dairying Co premises. He developed one section into a Restaurant which he and his partner Gaye ran for some time.

At the same time, Ray enthused a local group of people to assist in developing the other section into a Museum as a tribute to our founders and to show people today how they lived and prospered throughout the district.

The official opening was 01-01-01, as part of the national Federation celebration events.

Ray had accumulated historic and interesting items through his demolition work across the State and locals were enthusiastic in providing what they had to enlarge the collection.

The Peter Turner Family Trust has provided much of the farm machinery and vehicles. Peter was a former dealer in these items and had collected many over the years. There are three sheds of this and other outside displays.
