Smithton Tasmania sits in the shadow of The Nut, a volcanic plug rising almost 200 meters out of the ocean on a nearby peninsula. On a clear day, you might be lucky enough to see Perkins and Robbins Islands off in the Bass Strait. This pretty little coastal town sits right on Duck Bay and River and is an important industrial and administrative centre for the Northwest Coast.

The economy is driven by a robust timber mill and potato processing plant. You’ll find Smithton at the end of the Bass Highway past other picturesque coastal towns like Penguin and Burnie.

An Important Industrial Town

This important industrial town is the very last stop on the road to the Arthur River and the Tarkine Wilderness beyond. It’s quite a rainy town because it sits right in the teeth of the Roaring Forties, the wind and weather system that continually churns in the Southern Hemisphere. All of this precipitation makes the fields around Smithton incredibly green and lush. The whipping wind of the Roaring Forties also makes the air in Smithton some of the cleanest in the world.

Adventure seekers love coming to Smithton to explore the Dismal Swamp which has a hidden Blackwood Forest and can be reached by foot. And just a little further west of town, Marrawah attracts adrenaline junkies for its notoriously powerful and jaw-droppingly high surf.

Nature Enthusiasts, Extreme Surfers, Timber Workers and Farmers love Smithton Tasmania

Smithton is the gateway to the rugged lands of far northwest Tasmania. It makes for a picturesque base camp for nature lovers venturing off into the wilderness beyond. This industrial town sitting right on the Bass Strait is also the perfect home for extreme surfers looking to challenge themselves on the massive waves of Marrawah.

Smithton is also an important administrative centre for the lush farming fields of the northwest coast. The productive timber mill in town also employs many of Smithton’s citizens. You’ll find that Smithton has a blue-collar charm sitting right on a picturesque coastline.

History

Smithton was originally named after the Duck River. A post office was established on the river in 1873 but was renamed Smithton in 1895. But Smithton would not be declared a town until the nearby Mowbray swamp was drained for use as farmland in 1905.

The town came to life when a regular rail service called the Marrawah Tramway began back in 1913. It would be a while before schools were opened in town. The first high school was established in 1937 while the first kindergarten was opened in 1951. The town really began to flourish in the ’50s when a public hospital was opened.

Looking for attractions in Strahan? The four-hour River and Rainforest tour takes you from the shores of Macquarie Harbour into the rainforest and mountains of Tasmania’s rugged west coast. The full-day Queenstown Explorer takes passengers all the way along the 35km track to the historic mining town. It then returns to Strahan, with sightseeing stops along the way.

The extraordinary engineering achievement of this railway will be evident as you cross historic bridges, including Iron Bridge. Also see the remains of the 244-metre trestle bridge at Quarter Mile. You’ll visit some of the stations along the line, and have the chance to walk in the rainforest. For honey lovers, you will taste wild leatherwood honey, harvested from the wilderness.

During your journey, your guide will tell you the stories of the railway and the resilient people lived and worked along its length. From the men who laboured to build the line and keep the trains running, to the families and children that made a life in the forest. Also learn about the two visionary Irishmen whose fierce rivalry and undaunted ambition brought the railway to life.

West Coast Reflections Exhibition

Architects, writers, woodturners, gardeners and historians contributed their talents to the acclaimed exhibition West Coast Reflections. The exhibition is at the West Coast Visitor Information and Booking Centre. The story of the people of West Coast starts 35,000 years ago with the Aborigines, and proceeds through convict times, mining and forestry. The exhibit includes rainforests, caves, oral history.

The centre also hosts Tasmania’s longest-running play The Ship That Never Was. The story is based on a real event that happened in 1834. The last ship built at the convict settlement at Macquarie Harbour was about to sail for the new prison at Port Arthur but was hijacked by 10 convict shipwrights.

Strahan is a harbour-side village with a dark and fascinating convict past set on the edge of the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area.

Nestled on the shores of massive Macquarie Harbour, Strahan is the gateway to the World Heritage-listed Franklin–Gordon Wild Rivers National Park.

Boat cruises provide an unforgettable journey through World Heritage Wilderness into the pristine temperate rainforests of the Gordon River.

Strahan is full of stories from the days of convicts and pioneers toughing it out in Tassie’s wild west. Nearby, in Macquarie Harbour is Sarah Island, once a notorious convict prison and a powerful reminder of the brutal treatment of Tasmania’s convicts.

These days, Strahan is an iconic travel destination with shops selling artisan wares and eateries serving up delicious local produce.

There are long stretches of wild ocean beach to explore, massive sand dunes to conquer and forest adventures to be had.

Strahan is also the departure point for the West Coast Wilderness Railway. From Strahan you can take a return half-day journey into the wilderness or a full-day journey to Queenstown and back.

George Town in Tasmania is Australia’s 3rd-oldest city behind only Hobart and Sydney. But it is difficult to focus on the history of this vibrant north coast town as you drive in through beautiful orchards, lavender fields, berry farms and vineyards. Once you get over the stunning inbound drive, head over to the Old Watch Museum. This retired lock-up is now a history museum for George Town and the area. You’ll be impressed by the depth of the area’s maritime history.

When you’re done touring the museum, pick up a self-guided George Town Heritage Trail brochure. The pamphlet will walk you through town past some of Australia’s most historic sites. But save some energy for hiring a bicycle. The 4-kilometer ride to nearby Low Head Pilot Station takes you down a scenic coastline to an 1805-built pilot building. The building, still in use today, was erected by free convict labour at the dawn of European history in Tasmania.

The Tamar River pouring into the Bass Strait at the edge of town gives visitors unlimited potential for water sport. George Town is a popular beachside destination for swimmers and surfers. Long sandy beaches and the cool waters of the strait are perfect for a summertime cool-off.

Fisherman flock to George Town to charter boats into the deeper waters of the strait where some of the planet’s healthiest fish live. And boating enthusiasts love George Town’s Bass and Flinders Centre where they can oggle at a nice collection of historical boats. You can even board a replica of the 1798 sloop Norfolk.

Being Australia’s third-oldest town, George Town has its share of historical buildings including the 1805-built pilot building and the 1843-built town gaol. The gaol has been refurbished and it reopened in 2004. It now features a history museum as well as a gallery. And art lovers descend on the town to attend the annual Lighthouse Regional Arts Festival.

George Town has it’s own little penguin colony at Low Head Beach. You can sit on the beach at dusk to watch these little guys fight the tiny surf to get back to their beach homes. The little creatures come back to land on in formations called rafts and they call out to each other before retiring for the night in their sandy holes.

With its rich maritime history as well as its seaside and riverside location, George Town is attractive for those who love the sea. The town is full of adventure tour outfitters excited to arrange a fishing expedition for you. You’ll also find a collection of historic boats at the Bass and Flinders Centre. And you can tour one of the oldest pilot houses in Australia built at the mouth of the Tamar River. It’s still in operation today.
