Bullo River Station is a working cattle station and homestead covering 500,000 acres of the Northern Territory.

Bullo River is both a working pastoral property and conservation sanctuary. The station is a birdwatchers’ paradise and is also home to a diverse range of wildlife.

Our station operates in harmony with the land, balancing sustainable farming methods with best-practice land management. Pristine landscape, carved with gorges, decorated with waterfalls and defined by the Victoria and Bullo rivers, make Bullo River Station one of the most breathtakingly beautiful cattle stations in Australia.

The list of daily tasks needed to manage the 4,000 strong Brahman-cross herd across half a million acres can look exhausting. However it’s certainly interesting and lots of fun.

You’ll get out on the station in four-wheel drives, all-terrain vehicles or even on horseback. Activities include bore checks, lick runs and cattle yard work. There’s poddy calves to be fed and muster training to do. Or take a farm tour to learn about everything we do.

Cattle mustering is seasonal over the dry season months June to September and guests are welcome to watch.

Bullo River Station: A Rich History of Men & Women with Cattle in their Blood

In the 1960’s, a pastoral lease for Bullo River Valley Station was granted. That brought about the arrival of pastoralists, stockmen and women who faced oppressive conditions and isolation. They poured their blood sweat and tears into developing Bullo into a viable cattle station.

We are still compiling a great deal of Bullo’s early history. It is clear through early imagery that Aboriginal people worked at the station, contributing to its early development. The Aboriginal men were known to be expert stockmen, with a unique talent for finding wayward stock.

The number and breeds of cattle have changed over the years, as have the stockmen who mustered across the valleys. The homestead and station has expanded and modernised. But the spirit of the bushmen and women who pioneered cattle in the outback remains in our team today.

Barramundi and prime organic beef from the surrounding pastures dominate the evening menu. We can cater for your dietary requirements.

Kings Creek Station lies 36 kilometres from the magnificent Kings Canyon (Watarrka) and is set amongst majestic desert oaks.

Kings Creek Station is a cattle station with a range of accommodation options from camping to luxury tents.

A range of supplies, meals and drinks can be bought at the station shop. You could even try one of our famous Kings Creek camel burgers!

The station is the largest exporter of wild camels in Australia and sells camels for live export, live domestic sales and meat.

Our History

Kings Creek Station was established in 1981 by Ian and Lyn Conway. This was originally vacant crown land with no infrastructure – no water, no electricity, no communications, no roads and no buildings.

Originally the vision was to run the Station as a cattle/camel property. Since then tourism has taken precedence although Kings Creek Station still runs cattle and exports camels. Kings Creek covers an area of 1800 sq kilometres of which 100 sq K’s is Freehold, the remainder being Leasehold.

Ian Conway is the grandson of William Liddle, who, in 1907, was the first permanent pastoralist in the Kings Canyon region. In 1929 Liddle took up a pastoral lease known as Angas Downs Station. Liddle’s first wife was an Arrente woman from Alice Springs. Bill and Mary had four children, the eldest being Hilda, Ian’s mother.

Ian’s father, Mortimer, was also born to an Arrente Woman and a white pastoralist. Mortimer attended the first school in Alice Springs in 1914. He then went on to work for Syd Kidman for 20 odd years as a boss drover.

Lyn Conway was born in Adelaide and met Ian in Alice Springs. When they first started Kings Creek Station, Lyn was more or less thrown into the deep end as there was no infrastructure. Everyday chores were very difficult especially with 2 young children.

Located against the spectacular backdrop of the George Gill Ranges, our unique air-conditioned bush tents offer comfortable and affordable accommodation.

  We are located off the Savannah Way, approximately 450 kilometres south east of Mataranka and 180 kilometres north east of Borroloola. The property is also accessible by light aircraft on our private airstrip, and helicopter.

Meals

Our homestead area includes a restaurant and catering facility as well as a fully licenced bar, surrounded by a 200-square metre deck with a seating capacity of over 100 guests.   The crocodile pond is a popular attraction for diners and guests, especially around feeding time during “Happy Hour”.   Our “Magical Hot Springs” is within metres of the homestead and offers a natural heated pool that is enjoyed throughout the tourist season.

Barkley Homestead NT is a remote roadhouse situated on the Barkly Highway, halfway between Tennant Creek in the Northern Territory and Camooweal in Queensland. It is the first and only stop for travellers crossing the border into the Territory, providing welcome relief from an overall journey of over 460km between towns.

The town, also known as Gove,  is located in the Top End of the Northern Territory. It is by the Arafura Sea on the Gove Peninsula, East Arnhem Land. Nhulunbuy is remote by any standards. The Central Arnhem Road provides the only land link to Darwin and the Stuart Highway; however, this region is prone to flooding and is usually cut off during the wet season. Nhulunbuy means ‘honey man’ in Yolngu language, but is also known as Gove. The Gove Peninsula was named by Europeans after Pilot Officer William Gove who died in World War II.

An outdoor lovers paradise

Known as an outdoor lover’s paradise Nhulunbuy is where locals enjoy fishing, sailing and bird watching. Also enjoyed are four-wheel-drive excursions to exquisite beaches and wilderness areas. The town has educational, health, social, sporting, cultural and shopping facilities for the people of the town. It also supports the very remote homeland communities of East Arnhem Land.

Serviced by daily domestic flights Nhulunbuy has many local attractions. These include the Yirrkala Arts and Crafts Museum, Nambara Arts and Crafts Centre, and the annual Garma Festival. All these give a fascinating insight into the powerful traditional culture of the region’s Yolngu people.

Each August, Gulkula near Nhulunbuy, holds the Garma festival. This is a celebration of Yolngu culture is considered one of the most important indigenous festivals in Australia. Around 2,000 Indigenous and non-Indigenous people travel from around Australia and the world to attend the festival to learn and contribute. Garma is a Yolngu word for ‘two-way learning process’. There is traditional and contemporary music and dance, art and craft, education, performances and sport. Art and craft are gaining worldwide recognition and is an opportunity for Yolngu to gain economic independence.

Gove Airport is on the Gove Peninsula in the Northern Territory of Australia. It services the mining town of Nhulunbuy and several Aboriginal communities including Yirrkala. The airport is located 5.8 nautical miles south southeast of the Nhulunbuy town centre, on Melville Road.

Operated and maintained by the Nhulunbuy Corporation, Gove Airport commenced operation in the 1970’s. It brings high quality transport services to remote East Arnhem Land to this day. Gove Airport is serviced by Airnorth’s Darwin-Gove-Cairns return E170 jet service. There is also smaller Brasilia 120 aircraft between Darwin, Groote Eylandt and Gove.

A number of aircraft charter operators are based at Gove Airport and conduct a combined total of around 20,000 movements a year. Additionally Gove is serviced by a full-time medical evacuation service operated by Careflight NT.

The airport is located on the site of the former RAAF Airfield Gove. The World War II airbase was built in 1943 and named for Pilot Officer William Gove who was killed in action near Maningrida. During the war, the airfield was used by No. 83 Squadron RAAF flying CAC Boomerangs and No. 13 Squadron RAAF flying Lockheed Venturas, with No. 42 Squadron RAAF operating PBY Catalina flying boats out of nearby Drimmie Head. At the height of operations, over 5,000 servicemen were stationed at the base.

Shaped like an aircraft, the unique architecturally-designed Main Terminal today offers city-standard airport facilities. Around 70,000 passengers currently travel to and from the Gove Peninsula each year.
