It is a charming town brimming with history. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wentworth retains many historic buildings, including &#8211; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>The&nbsp;<strong>Old Gaol<\/strong>, <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The&nbsp;<strong>Courthouse<\/strong>, <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The&nbsp;<strong>Convent<\/strong>&nbsp;and <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The&nbsp;<strong>Customs House<\/strong>&nbsp;(now a private residence).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wentworth was once Australia\u2019s busiest inland river port. In the 1890s there were 92 paddle steamers working the Darling. Between 1890 and 1900 Wentworth became the largest river port in Australia. There were over 400 craft using it in a year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.murrayriver.com.au\/about-the-murray\/captain-charles-sturt\" target=\"_blank\">Captain Charles Sturt<\/a> named the Murray River on 23 January 1830, from junction of the rivers. Earlier in 1829, Sturt explored the Darling River headwaters. Sturt also previously passed the junction of the Darling with the Murray. You are able to climb the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitnsw.com\/destinations\/country-nsw\/the-murray\/wentworth\/attractions\/darling-and-murray-river-junction-and-viewing-tower\" target=\"_blank\">viewing tower<\/a>&nbsp;to see the river junction from above &#8211; definitely worth doing!  Follow the Wentworth Trail to uncover the town\u2019s top attractions and historic buildings. Don&#8217;t forget to include the heritage-listed&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitnsw.com\/destinations\/country-nsw\/the-murray\/wentworth\/attractions\/old-wentworth-gaol\" target=\"_blank\">Old Wentworth Gaol<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitnsw.com\/destinations\/country-nsw\/the-murray\/wentworth\/attractions\/ferguson-tractor-monument\" target=\"_blank\">Ferguson Tractor Monument<\/a>.  At the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitnsw.com\/destinations\/country-nsw\/the-murray\/wentworth\/attractions\/wentworth-pioneer-museum\" target=\"_blank\">Wentworth Pioneer Museum<\/a>, see fossilised remains of Australia\u2019s extinct megafauna and more than 3,000 artefacts from the area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Many Natural Wonders at Wentworth, NSW<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Visit&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitnsw.com\/destinations\/country-nsw\/the-murray\/wentworth\/attractions\/junction-island-nature-reserve-canoe-tree-and-walking-track\" target=\"_blank\">Junction Island Nature Reserve<\/a>, where you can walk to the point where the two rivers meet. Another way to experience the area\u2019s beautiful rivers, tranquil billabongs and riverside red gums is on a guided kayak tour.&nbsp; Also, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitnsw.com\/destinations\/country-nsw\/the-murray\/wentworth\/attractions\/lock-10-and-weir\" target=\"_blank\">Lock 10 and weir<\/a>&nbsp;is a great picnic spot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Visit the culturally significant&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitnsw.com\/destinations\/country-nsw\/the-murray\/wentworth\/attractions\/perry-sandhills\" target=\"_blank\">Perry Sandhills<\/a>, spectacular drifts of ancient sand dune.
