Hutton Vale Farm in SA was first established in 1843 by John Howard Angas, known as J.H.A. during the early colonial period. He was only 19 when he arrived in the Barossa, sent by his father from England, to oversee the family’s agriculture properties.

Sustaining the new settlers of South Australia with food was part of his charter. It was on Hutton Vale Farm that he established his prized studs and mixed farm produce.

He went on to become one of the largest land owners in the colony.

Upon European settlement the Angas family took up land in South Australia. John Howard Angas named this section Hutton Vale Farm in 1843 and to this day it remains in the family.

Hutton Vale Farm is a mixed farm with many facets, including grapes, wool and food growing. The philosophy is to run each arm of the business in a sustainable manner while at the same time entwining them together as a whole. Offering award-winning wine, lamb, woolen throws and tailored experiences for guests.

Accommodation at Hutton Vale Farm SA

Set amidst the tranquil and idyllic, Barossa landscape, both our accommodation options have picturesque views over the farm and vineyards.

The J.H.A Stone Cellar is a luxury, two bedroom, stand alone villa with ensuite bathrooms and additional outdoor shower, located on Hutton Vale Farm, set amidst the tranquil, rural Barossa landscape.
One of the truly Australian attractions in Naracoorte is the Sheep’s Back Museum.

The Museum houses galleries showcasing the history of the Australian wool industry in the higher rainfall areas of south-eastern Australia.

The old stone mill building houses galleries telling the story of the Australian wool industry in the ‘inside country’.

The focus is on the wool shed and the skills and trades of the workers in the industry. It includes the lifestyle of the wool growers over time, and the impact the industry has had on the environment.

The wool industry focus continues in the ‘Big Shed’, where the unique Robotic Shearer is housed. This piece of technology was developed in South Australia. It is displayed as the climax of slowly-evolving technology of hand pieces that have served the industry for 200 years.

A quaint old slab-construction wool shed, that began life as a settler’s home, is a museum piece in its own right.

Woomera in South Australia is an artificial town specifically designed by the Long Range Weapons Board of Administration. It was built to provide accommodation and facilities for personnel – scientists, technicians and ancillary staff. The staff came to work at an isolated experimental station which was used to test rockets, weapons and missiles.

Australia was the fourth country in the world to launch its own satellite – after USA, Russia and France. Because of the secrecy act, it used to be a ‘No Go’ town. There are no secrets now however.

Woomera is located in the South Australian desert and the average annual rainfall is only 190 mm.

The visitor leaves the Stuart Highway at Pimba, which is nothing more than a roadhouse, pub, service station and a few houses located near the railway line, and drives 6 km across the desert to Woomera.

During the 1960s Woomera had a population of over 5000 but today the population is around 120. Over the years it has changed from an important location for experimenting with rockets. At various times it has been used by the Australian armed forces, Great Britain, the US Air Force, NASA and West Germany.

Between 1969 and 1999 the Nurrungar joint US – Australian Ground Station operated in the area. It was located 19 km from Woomera and was closed to the public.

Between 1999 and 2003 it was used by the Federal Government as the Woomera Immigration Detention Centre. It housed asylum seekers who had arrived in Australia by sea.

Today Woomera township is open to the public, however while there are streets of unoccupied houses they are not allowed to be purchased. Its main appeal is the Woomera Heritage Centre and the Missile Park.

The Woomera Range Complex SA is located in the north-west pastoral region of the state, with the operational area of the Range encompassed by the ‘Woomera Prohibited Area’ (WPA), which covers very sparsely populated ‘outback’ land. The range also includes the restricted airspace over the WPA.
